Barcelona Cathedral, known as the Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia, was built by several architects from the 13th to the 15th centuries, on the site of a Romanesque cathedral. Its impressive Neo-Gothic façade was not added until the 19th century, when it was renovated by Josep Oriol Mestres.

The building was listed as a Cultural Heritage Site in 1929 and includes a Gothic style cloister that is home to thirteen geese. The cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Cross but also to Saint Eulàlia, patron saint of the city. Legend has it that when she was martyred she was thirteen years old and therefore subjected to thirteen forms of torture. This legend has continued to the present day and tour guides often quote it in relation to the thirteen white geese.

Several streets lead to Barcelona Cathedral: Avenida del Portal de l’Àngel, which forks into Calle dels Arcs, that leads to the cathedral; Avenida de la Catedral, which joins up with Via Laietana; and finally, Calle del Bisbe, which also leads to the cathedral and serves as an entry point to Barcelona’s Gothic quarter.

Around this important place of worship, you’ll find many different sights and cultural institutions. These include Barcelona’s Historical Archives, the Diocesan Museum, the Frederic Marès Museum and the Museum of the History of Barcelona, which includes several different historic sites such as the Temple of Augustus on Calle Paradís, just behind the cathedral.

The Barri Gòtic, or Gothic quarter, is made up of narrow, mostly pedestrianised streets, so finding somewhere to park is no easy matter. Right next to the cathedral, you’ll find one of our Saba car parks where you can park your vehicle at any time of the day or night.
