As the oldest and most historical part of the city, Barcelona’s Gothic quarter, the Barri Gòtic, is one of the four neighbourhoods that make up the district of Ciutat Vella. Because of its long history, the neighbourhood is in turn made up of smaller neighbourhoods that each conserve their own personality: the Jewish Quarter (or Call in Catalan), Sants Just i Pastor, Santa Maria del Pi, La Catedral, Santa Anna, La Mercè and El Palau.

The neighbourhood preserved its original structure until well into the 19th century, when it underwent major transformations in its make-up and shape. One example of this was the conversion of parish cemeteries into public squares.

It is home to numerous historical sights and points of interest, such as Barcelona Cathedral (Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia). Then there are the squares of Plaza Sant Jaume, on which you’ll find the City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat (the seat of the Catalan government), Plaza Reial and Plaza del Rei, home to the Museum of the History of Barcelona. In this area, you’ll also come across the Church of Sant Felip Neri, the avenue of Portal de l’Àngel, the ruins of the Temple of Augustus and the Casa Martí, among many other sights to visit.

The Barri Gòtic is a hive of activity, both in the day and at night, so you can almost always find something for everyone: bars to enjoy a drink in, pleasant strolls, or shopping on Portal de l’Àngel. In short, you’ll never get bored and you absolutely must not miss this area if you’re coming to Barcelona.

If you’re coming to this area by car and don’t know where to park, you’ll find a Saba car park right on Avenida de la Catedral. Our car park is open 24 hours a day and has VIA-T available at entry and exit.
