The area around Barcelona’s port is one of the city’s most important places for tourists and locals alike, as it is a gateway to the sea for the whole of Spain. The port was developed at the same time as the rest of the city was taking shape in the early 15th century. The first stone of what was to become the port was laid in 1477, in the reign of King John II of Aragon and Navarre. Just like the city itself, Barcelona’s port grew and grew over the years into what we see today.

The port area has four very different parts to it. Firstly, there is the commercial port, where container ships dock. The second part is the public area, which has the cruise ships, ferries and pleasure boats. Finally, there are two sections known as the logistics and energy port, which contain the main infrastructure that provides Catalonia with its transport and energy supply.

With its 35 terminals, the port covers an area of 829 hectares and its docks total 20 kilometres in length. As well as being commercially important, the seafront area is one of the busiest in the city. You can go for a walk from one end of the promenade to the other or simply lie on the beach till the sun goes down. When night falls, things don’t start to calm down… if anything, the opposite. The area has a vast range of high quality restaurants, bars and nightclubs in which to get a taste of Barcelona’s nightlife.

It’s worth pointing out that the port area is not an easy place in which to find parking, and neither is it that easy to get there by public transport. So we recommend that you park your car in our car park at number 2 Calle de l’Abat Safont, right next to the port area.
