Built in 1976 according to the design by Fernando Higueras, it takes its inspiration from the Neo-Gothic style, with a façade that is topped with pinnacles and a sloping roof that gives the building a vertical flow and a Nordic feel, as in Norway this kind of structure is traditionally used to prevent the build-up of snow. Some of the other façades on the square were designed along the same lines as the city hall.
Ciudad Real City Hall is situated on Plaza Mayor. The council is chaired by the Mayor of Ciudad Real, who has been democratically elected by universal suffrage since 1979.
What makes the façade so special are the window boxes at each and every window, with hundreds of red carnations that create a contrast with the light coloured stone of the building, setting off its architectural beauty. In front of the building, in a beautiful flower bed, a bronze and iron sculpture has been put up, created using the old bell that once adorned the previous city hall.
Because it is situated right in the middle of the square, the City Hall area is always bustling with locals and visitors alike. It’s also an ideal area for shopping, trying out the traditional cuisine of Ciudad Real, getting out and about with the family and even taking the dog for a walk.
