The current León City Hall is situated on the city’s main avenue, Avenida Ordoño II, and is surrounded by all the main shops and banks. Before it was the seat of local government, it housed the headquarters of the CajaEspaña bank.


The building has five storeys and is constructed in white stone, with cast iron filigree decorations on the lower part of its façade.

If you’re visiting the area, you’ll see that in front of the main entrance to the building there is a sculpture symbolising the council’s relocation in 1998, as well as a stone version of a charter written by King Alfonso XI by which the city council was founded.

The building that used to house León City Council stands in Plaza de San Marcelo, one of the busiest parts of León’s historic city centre. It was built in 1585 and designed by the architect Juan de Rivero. However, in 2002 the council relocated and the old City Hall is now home to the Museum of León (Museo de León).

The area around the city hall is a hive of activity both morning and evening, and it’s the perfect place to do some shopping, have a meal in a restaurant or just enjoy being outdoors. In the evening, when the city lights are turned on, León’s nightlife begins, with plenty to offer both visitors and locals. Some bars and restaurants are particularly popular: La Posada del Buda, El Traga, Soho, Nuevo Caño Badillo, etc.
