In front of the roundabout that is the site of the famous and iconic Cibeles fountain (Fuente de Cibeles, in Spanish) stands one of the most beautiful buildings in all of Madrid: the Telecommunications Palace (Palacio de Telecomunicaciones), which today houses the main offices of Madrid City Council. It is a complex made up of two buildings, both of them with a white façade. They stand on one side of Plaza de Cibeles and cover around 30,000 square metres of a site that was formerly the Buen Retiro Gardens.

The whole complex is one of the first and foremost examples of Modernist architecture in Spain. The façade has both Neo-Plateresque and Salamancan Baroque features. The building was designed by the architects Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi as the offices of the Sociedad de Correos y Telégrafos de España (the Spanish Post and Telegraph Company) which was previously based here.

The decorative parts of the façade and the interior were created by the sculptor Ángel García Díaz.

Members of the public are permitted to visit the interior of the building and even go up to the roof terrace to enjoy the views of Madrid. There is an affordable restaurant here and a viewing area with vistas of different parts of the city centre.

The area around the city hall is full of hustle and bustle day and night, as it connects with all the city’s main thoroughfares. Close to the City Hall are most of the places you will want to visit, like theatres, restaurants, parks, shops and tourist attractions.

To visit this area, we recommend that you park your car in one of the Saba public car parks. We have a car park that’s open 24 hours a day on Plaza de los Monteses, with spaces for disabled users, surveillance and VIA-T available at entry and exit. There’s also a car wash service available for you to use.
