Montjuïc Park is situated on a hill that is part of the Sants-Montjuïc district on the south side of the city. The area gets its name from the fact that it was historically used as a Jewish cemetery. The name Montjuïc comes from medieval Catalan and means the ‘Hill of the Jews’.

Its location meant that it was ideal as one of the city’s main defence points. The park includes several places of cultural interest. The first is, of course, the National Palace of Montjuïc (Palau Nacional de Montjuïc), which was built between 1926 and 1929 for the Universal Exposition held in Barcelona in ‘29. Today it houses the Catalan National Art Museum (MNAC), which includes one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Romanesque art.

On the north-eastern slopes of the hill, you’ll find the little Jewish cemetery and several viewpoints with the best vistas over Barcelona. The area also has several gardens, most of them created in the early 20th century. There’s the Joan Maragall garden, the Miramar garden, the Historical Botanical Gardens of Barcelona and the Petra Kelly garden, dedicated to the German ecological artist.

There are also several sports facilities, such as the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, the Sant Jordi sporting arena (Palau Sant Jordi) and Barcelona Teatre Musical, a former sports complex.

To get to Montjuïc Park, the best option is either public transport or by car. Saba has a car park in the area at number 20 Calle de Vilardell, where you can park easily, quickly and close to the main cultural sights.
