The Great Mosque of Córdoba is one of the most stunning buildings on the entire Iberian peninsula. It is supported by more than 1000 pillars that will undoubtedly leave you lost for words. Construction began in the year 785 after the Muslim invasion, and for a period of time it was the second largest mosque in the world, after that of Mecca.


Its beauty is so elaborate and so indescribable that we strongly recommend you go and see it for yourself; it may even cause some visitors an attack of Stendhal’s syndrome.

After the Reconquest in the 13th century, the mosque was converted into a cathedral. Today it forms part of the Historic Centre of Córdoba, a Unesco World Heritage Site, and together with the Alhambra, is the best remaining example of Andalusi architecture.

The complex is suitable for families with babies and for disabled visitors. If you do want to visit this cathedral and former Mosque, we recommend that you check the opening hours beforehand, as they change depending on the season. From March to October, opening hours are from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sundays and public holidays from 8.30 am to 11.30 am and from 3 pm to 7 pm. From November to February, it is open to the public at the same times except on Sundays and public holidays, when it closes one hour earlier in the afternoons, at 6 pm.

Very close to the mosque, you’ll find Calleja de las Flores. This is a small, narrow street adorned with colourful flowerpots and a pair of stone arches, that has won the hearts of many tourists.

If you want to park your vehicle nearby to visit this wonderful area, you can leave it at the Saba car park that’s open 24 hours a day at Córdoba Train Station, on the roundabout known as the Glorieta de las Tres Culturas.
