The Cathedral of Santa María is also known as Murcia Cathedral, as it is this capital city’s most important landmark. It was built back in the 14th century by renowned Spanish artists and architects, including Diego Sánchez de Almansa and Jerónimo Quijano, but the façade was not completed until 1751. The front of the church is in the Baroque style: a fitting introduction to the rest of the church.

Inside the basilica, different styles come together in harmony, through some spectacular features. One of the most pervading styles is the Gothic, and this can be seen in the large cathedral dome. But you can also see areas of Baroque, particularly in the altarpiece that presides over the cathedral.

Murcia Cathedral is situated in the old part of the city, on Plaza Hernández Amores. Nearby there are many major landmarks and points of interest such as the Bishop’s Palace (Palacio Episcopal in Spanish) the San Juan de Dios monumental ensemble (Conjunto Monumental de San Juan de Dios) and the Old Bridge (Puente Viejo) that crosses the River Segura.

Classed as a cultural heritage site, the cathedral is a Catholic place of workshop and the see of the diocese of Cartagena. It has an extremely high bell tower, at 93 metres, and is also considered a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque architecture.
