Parking in Plaza de España (City Hall) - Alcázar de San Juan

So it’s not surprising to find it bustling with activity every day – people going for a walk, families having a drink at one of the outdoor cafés, or tourists trying out the regional dishes and produce in the shade of the Spanish Modernist colonnades.

On the northern side of the square is the town hall, a two-storey building with large decorative windows and both triangular and curved pediments whose mouldings depict classical masks. It was first opened in 1850 as the town’s social club, but today its purpose is to serve the general public as the seat of the town council.

Just in front of the town hall is the square’s fountain, a magnet for children, laughter and fun. It is watched over by a bronze sculpture of the painter Ángel Lizcano Monedero, a homage to this illustrious local artist who created many well-known works depicting local customs.

To the right of the fountain is the market, an unmissable stop for anyone wanting to buy top quality produce with a designation of origin. Local specialities include cheeses, a desert known as Bizcochá and a fantastic selection of wines.

To the left of the fountain is Alcázar de San Juan’s tourist office, where you can go to get detailed information on all the events that are organised both in this square and elsewhere in the town.
