A few minutes drive from the great beaches of Salou is one of Spain’s most amazing theme parks: PortAventura. It’s a really fun place, whether you go as a couple, with friends or with the family.
The theme park has grown considerably since it was first opened in 1995 and it now covers an area of 824 hectares.
Its top attractions are the Shambhala, a massive roller coaster; Dragon Khan, the symbol of the park, a roller coaster with speeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour with vertiginous 360º loops; and the Huracán Condor, a tower with a free-fall drop of 115 metres, only for the very bravest! The park also has water rides such as the Tutuki Splash, Grand Canyon Rapids and Angkor, all great for cooling down in summer. There’s also a train that travels around the park from one end to the other to make it easier for you to get to all the different areas, as well as boats that cross the lakes.
PortAventura is divided into themed sections, each one based on a civilisation: Far West (The Western USA), Polynesia (Polynesian culture), Mediterrània (the peoples of the Mediterranean), China (Asian culture) and México (the Mayan culture). There’s also a themed area for very young children, called “SésamoAventura”. This section has plenty of small, simple rides so that tiny tots can have plenty of fun on their day at the theme park too.
It’s worth pointing out that at Christmas and Halloween, the park gets dressed up for the occasion, so if you’re visiting at those times of year, there are new things to enjoy.
Next to the park is the Caribe Aquatic Park, a water park with a whole array of wet rides.
If you need it, you’ll find a Saba public car park close to the park on Plaza Corona de Aragó.
