On Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor is where you’ll find its City Hall (Ayuntamiento de Salamanca). This is without a doubt one of the most emblematic buildings in the city, together with the Casa de las Conchas and Salamanca’s two cathedrals.

This historic and monumental building that houses the city council was completed in 1755 and the square itself was built in the early 18th century.

The city hall is just one of the buildings that line the Plaza Mayor and it is one of the city’s best-loved. It stands out from the other buildings on the square because of its bells and its clock, a popular meeting point for locals. One of its interesting features can be seen next to the bells: a foursome of allegorical statues representing agriculture, industry, music and poetry. It was also the scene of an important historical event: the writer Miguel de Unamuno proclaimed the Second Spanish Republic from the balcony.

The city hall faces north and its five arches on the ground floor are a little wider than the others on the square. Under these arches are some café terraces where you can shelter from the elements and have a drink at any time of the year, maybe even a coffee or hot chocolate on a stormy autumn day. But in the summertime, the square is transformed and a stage is set up where music festivals, concerts and plays are performed, making it the perfect place to spend a morning in a great atmosphere and surrounded by Salamanca’s culture and historic buildings.

If you need it, you’ll find a Saba public car park at Salamanca Train Station, at number 122 Paseo de la Estación.
