On Calle de la Riera, right at the heart of the city, is the Teatro Principal de Palma de Mallorca, a theatre built on the site previously occupied by the Casa de las Comedias from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The Teatro Principal was officially opened in 1857 and for the first year it was called “Teatro de la Princesa”.

On 3 June 1858, Macbeth opened to great public acclaim, accompanied by Verdi’s score. Unfortunately, after the fifth performance on the night of the 11th to the 12th of June, a terrible fire broke out that practically gutted the whole theatre, leaving only the façade and the side walls.

A short time after this tragedy, work began to rebuild the theatre and was commissioned to the same architects and decorators. After two years of intense work, the theatre was finished and was given the name “Teatro Príncipe de Asturias”.

Since then, the theatre has undergone several refurbishments to make it one of Majorca’s most important cultural venues. All kinds of performance arts are staged here in different languages: theatre, opera, zarzuela, dance, music hall and much more. The theatre has its own choir that performs during the opera and zarzuela seasons.

As well as opening its doors for performances, the theatre offers guided tours for the general public that are free of charge take place every Saturday at 12 noon. Groups of up to 30 people are permitted.

If you want to park close by, we have a Saba car park on Plaza de San Antonio, where you can park your vehicle and go and enjoy a show at the Teatro Principal.
