The Dalí Museum Theatre (Teatre-Museu Dalí) belongs to the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation and houses a unique collection of works by this internationally renowned painter. According to recent statistics, this museum in Figueres is the third most visited in the whole of Spain, with 1,333,430 visitors recorded in 2013. On a more global level, the Dalí Museum Theatre ranks 40th in the top 100 most visited museums in the world.

The Catalan artist was born in Figueres and bequeathed his entire collection of works to this museum and to the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. And because this town was his birthplace, Dalí personally designed and commissioned this museum, where much of his work was to be kept.

Originally built in 1849, the theatre was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and all that remained was the basic structure of the Neoclassical building. A local lawyer and art-lover, Ramón Guardiola Rovina, commissioned the restoration of the theatre in 1960. The Mayor of the time asked Dalí if he would like to donate one of his pieces to the local museum, and the artist’s response was to create an entire museum in the former Teatro de la Plaza. The square is now called Plaza Gala y Salvador Dalí and is situated right in the heart of Figueres. The museum is open from 9.30 am to 6 pm, but visitors should remember that the last entrance is at 5.15 pm.

You’ll find many other cultural and historic buildings in this area, such as Figueres Town Hall, El Jardí Municipal Theatre (Teatro Municipal El Jardí), the Museum of the Empordà (Museo del Empordà) and the Parish Church of Sant Pere de Figueres.

To get there, you can go by car and park in our Saba car park at number 107 Avenida Salvador Dalí, just a few metres away from the theatre.
