Las Palmas has a fantastic climate throughout the year, so it’s no surprise that its main beach, Las Canteras, is highly popular with both locals and tourists alike. It ranks among the 10 best beaches in Spain according to the Travellers’ Choice Beach Awards.

It has an excellent environmental management system, as well as being certified as fully accessible to disabled people, making it an ideal spot for everyone.

Las Canteras beach is divided into three different sections according to the curves that it follows along the coastline: the northern Arc, the central Arc and the southern Arc. Each of them have their own features that are worth taking a look at.

The name of the beach means ‘the quarries’, after the strip of sedimentary sandstone that runs parallel to the shoreline, protecting it from the weather and the effect of the waves.

Some visitors may be surprised to hear locals refer to it by its old name of Playa del Arrecife, which was used in reference to the strip of stone that rose up out of the water like a reef (arrecife, in Spanish). Part of this rock was used to construct buildings in the city, such as Las Palmas Cathedral.

The beach is 3.1 kilometres long and around 50 metres wide. Its sand is fine and golden, ideal for walking on barefoot, and the Atlantic waters that lap its shores are generally calm throughout the year.

If you want somewhere to park, you’ll find a Saba car park at 324-328 Calle León y Castillo, open 24 hours a day. It has spaces for disabled persons, mobile phone reception and constant surveillance.
