Often known just as “Sol”, Puerta del Sol, along with Plaza de España, is one of the most famous squares in Madrid: a focal point that attracts both locals and tourists and home to some of the city’s most important landmarks.

It was developed over the course of several centuries. Initially, it began with the Casa de Correos in the mid-18th century. A century later, between 1857 and 1862, it acquired its current shape, following the designs of the architects Lucio del Valle, Juan River and José Morer. In the 20th century, the gardens and fountain were added and work was carried out to extend the pedestrian area.

The square has three features that are recognised by every Spaniard: the statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, the symbol of Madrid, which was erected in 1967 and is one of the city’s most popular meeting points; the clock on the Casa de Correos that rings in the New Year and under which thousands of people gather to eat the traditional twelve grapes; and finally, the Kilometre Zero marking on the ground, from which all the radial roads in Spain begin. If you do come to this square, don’t forget to take a selfie in this iconic location.

You can’t leave Madrid without visiting Plaza del Sol and its adjacent streets. You can enjoy a pleasant walk in the area if you leave your car in the Saba public car park on Plaza de los Mostenses. This car park is open 24 hours a day, has spaces reserved for disabled persons, vehicle surveillance and VIA-T at entry and exit. There’s also a car wash service available.
